Deionised water below 5 ppm total dissolved solids lifts all of it and evaporates without leaving mineral residue, which is why it does not streak the way tap water does. No detergents or chemical agents are used, so coatings, sealant joints and glazing gaskets are unaffected.
What washing will not fix: staining chemically etched into glass, cement or grout runoff that has bonded to the surface, and failed sealant joints. Those need glass restoration or remedial work. Where a drone does not do 100%. Deep recesses, cantilevered sections, soffits and re-entrant corners cannot be reached from open air. Residential high-rise is where drone cleaning has the clearest advantage, because the alternative disrupts people who live there. Gondola rigging means noise, restricted access and workers passing residents' windows for a week or more.
The approach has official backing. In October 2025 the Ministry of National Development and HDB trialled drones for washing high-rise HDB ledges, citing reduced risk and cost against conventional methods.
